History

MBMR was incorporated as an investment holding company in 1994 under the Med-Bumikar Mara Sdn. Bhd. Group of Companies (the MBM Group) and was successfully listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now known as Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad) on 9 February 1995. Building on its exclusive distributorship of Daihatsu motor vehicles which it secured in 1980 under Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (DMSB), MBMR has grown over the years through acquisitions and organic expansion.

A restructuring of its parent’s businesses resulted in the MBM Group’s automotive businesses being consolidated under the listed entity MBMR, with the purchase of the 20% interest in Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn. Bhd. (Perodua) in 2000 and 42% interest in Hino Motors (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (now known as Hino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.) in 2006 from the parent holding company of MBMR.

The acquisition of Federal Auto Holdings Berhad (Federal Auto) marked a significant milestone for the MBMR Group to pursue a multi-brand strategy. Federal Auto was an established Volvo cars distributor until the year 2000 when it remained a leading dealer. Today, it is also the leading dealer for an international reputable brand, Volkswagen.

MBMR also expanded into automotive parts manufacturing with the acquisition of wheel manufacturer, Oriental Metal Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd. (OMI); and safety and NVH products manufacturer, Autoliv Hirotako Sdn. Bhd. and Hirotako Acoustics Sdn. Bhd., subsidiaries of Hirotako Holdings Berhad.

In 2012, MBMR invested in 42% equity interest in Hino Motors Manufacturing (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., which has developed a new plant in Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan to manufacture Hino products in Malaysia. The plant was commissioned in early 2014.
